Is AI Stealing My Dream Job?
What is AI?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a machine’s ability to perform a task that would’ve previously required human intelligence. Human intelligence has set us apart from other living things, with some defining intelligence as the ability to adapt, solve problems, plan, improvise in new situations, and learn new things. Today’s AI systems might demonstrate some traits of human intelligence; learning, problem-solving, perception, and social intelligence, but I don’t believe AI will ever match the authenticity of human creativity. Should I Be Worried?
My dream career is to become a website designer and developer, working for a small design studio in Perth. Both designing websites and applications, as well as dabbling in HTML, CSS and JavaScript code would be a dream job. But lately, AI tools like ChatGPT and AI-generated art, has raised some concerns within the design community. However, a common trait amongst all AI generate designs is predictability, and basic commonly thought of designs.
Human creativity cannot be replaced! To create a website that stands out, excites visitors, and appeals to the target audience, human interaction will be needed. AI will never be able to communicate a brands personality and credibility through a website design like a human that has personally experienced and conversed with a brand could.
A designer’s job includes interacting and forming a relationship with our clients. This ability to liaise with clients to get their initial wants, needs, preferences, and personal brand story, is much more effective when it’s a conversation between 2 determined people. As well as this initial meeting, a designer must maintain a constant back-and-forth of feedback, improvement suggestions, changes, and adjustment of the overall design. Even after the design is completed, it is always nice for a client to feel like they can reach out anytime, to ask for any additions or help that may be needed. I believe my social and verbal skills are very succinct, and I have a very friendly and positive personality. My approachability and professionalism is perfect for any interactions during the design process.
As a designer, our main aim is to create a design that is unique and intriguing, that communicates ideas to inspire, inform, entertain, and captivate consumers. I believe my designs are unique and different because I always have the user in mind. I create designs that are easy to navigate and interact with, causing no frustration for a user. Readability is also very important for a website to be accessible. Constantly testing your websites readability and clarity is always a good idea, to make sure text stands out against background colours, font sizes are not too big, but not too small, and that the chosen typeface is one that is legible. My personal design style is minimal, delicate, and clean, which ensures the user isn’t overwhelmed by unnecessary distractions, creating an overall calm user experience. By always having the user in mind, I can create designs that have intriguing, yet easy to use interfaces, far surpassing anything AI could create.
Just In Case, Let’s Have a Backup Plan!
AI is a remarkable tool, that has come so far over the years, and I know it will continue to grow, and advance over the years. I hope there will be developments that make out job easier and assist in the creative process, rather than replace us all together. I hope im not just ignorant, but as a backup, there will always be a need for people to maintain, monitor, train and oversee what AI is doing. So nonetheless, my dream job of front-end-development might come in handy after all.
